Love or 'remembrance' ring

Gold ring, the bezel formed as two hands holding a glazed heart containing a lock of hair

The custom of exchanging rings as "remembrances" with friends or lovers continued throughout the first half of the nineteenth century. The rings often bore symbols such as the heart or the snake.
